Prince of Monaco to hold extensive classic vehicle auction
Okay, this headline sounds like the stuff out of a fairy tale, but when you're a prince, I guess collecting exotic and rare classic cars is a bit like owning matchbox cars – sometimes you just get bored with what you have.
Now, princes and classic cars are two things that don't normally go hand-in-hand, so I admit, I was a little suspect when I first saw this headline. But, as it turns out, not only is his highness, the Prince of Monaco an avid car fan, but he's announced he's planning to thin the ranks of his car collection at a low cost to some lucky buyers.
According to reports, Prince Albert II plans to auction off 38 of his cars. The list of offerings runs the gamut from pre-war automobiles to vintage American-made muscle cars, and includes oddities like a 1980 Citroen CX, a 1964 Dodge Dart and a 1939 Simca 5.
The auction will take place on July 26 at a museum in Monaco.
"My father, Prince Rainier, took over the development of [the Historic Grand Prix], which has today become one of the most prestigious [racing] events in the world," Albert II said, according to the source. "'Together, we established a private collection of classic cars which is particularly close to my heart. I now wish to add some new models to the collection."
A Porsche 911 with red and yellow racing stripes and a 4.7-litre V8 engine is one of the models expected to garner a high price, despite the lack of reserve at the auction. Experts say the car could fetch as much as £312,000 (or around $500,000).
