Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am 49 years old, married (Dawn) and have two children ages 13 (Kaitlyn) and 12 (Hunter). I was born in Bad Axe, Michigan, and have lived in this area my entire life, except for attending college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. My first car was a 1969 Chevelle. Since then I’ve owned a ’77 Chevelle, a ’79 Chevy 4×4 and a ’79 Z-28, along with quite a few others….
I’ve had a passion for cars since I was a young boy. We have a drag strip and a circle track about 10 miles from home and my dad took me to both tracks several times. My grandfather worked in the parts department at the Chevy dealership in town for about 40 years, so cars have been in our blood for generations. Seeing the cars at the races or various auto shows we attended really sparked my interest.
What Rides do you currently own?
My wife and I currently have a 2008 Ford Escape, a 2005 Cadillac Escalade EXT and our 2008 H3 Alpha.
What do you like most about your Cool Rides?
My wife, two children and I were in a very bad accident in July of 2010. Our 2006 Hummer H3 saved all of our lives. My two children escaped with relatively minor injuries and were released from the hospital the night of the accident. My wife and I both suffered fractured vertebrae, broken ribs, head injuries, several herniated disks in our backs and my wife’s left wrist was severely fractured. Our 2008 Alpha was purchased to replace the 2006 that was destroyed in that accident. At the time of the accident, we were discussing buying a new ZL-1 Camaro in 2012 and having some minor mods done for car shows. After the accident, my wife has let me modify our Hummer instead. I’d say we both like the supercharger and custom paint most about our H3.
The best thing about the Escape is the fuel mileage. The Caddy pickup doubles as our “wood hauler” and our “luxury car”. We love to ride in it, but we bought it because it’s a pickup.
What is the best memory you have with your favorite ride?
I’d say my favorite memory so far with our Alpha is seeing my wife Dawn’s reaction the first time she saw the completed paint work. She was almost speechless. That also eased the pain of explaining the cost of everything to her a bit!!
How do you store your ride(s) during infrequent use, and what maintenance tips can you provide for readers?
We have an enclosed 18′ x 21′ carport that we use to store our Hummer between shows. It has 9′ sidewalls and an 8′ high overhead door. We have crushed asphalt about 28″ deep compacted for the floor and hurricane anchors secure it to the ground.
For storage I have a Battery Tender Plus that keeps power in the battery. We use synthetic oil in all of our vehicles and keep them maintained regularly as the manufacturers recommend. For polish and shine on the exteriors I use Wizards brand products.
What was the first car you ever owned?
My first car was a 1969 Chevelle, back in 1979.
What is/was the BEST car ever made?
Prior to our accident in 2010 I would have said Chevrolet’s 5th Generation Camaro. I’d say the Camaro is now 2nd behind the Hummer brand of vehicles. I thank God every day that I still have my wife and children here with me.
What is/was the WORST car ever made?
Tough one here….maybe the Yugo, or the current Smart Car. Too scary to even imagine being in an accident in one of those smaller cars.
How did you first hear about the Cool Rides Online website?
I first saw it on Facebook. I looked at the site and thought it was really cool so I registered.
Is there anything else you’d like the Cool Rides Online members to know about you?
My wife and I still do physical therapy and undergo pain management procedures to help with our injuries from the 2010 accident. Car shows, cruises and parades are just the right speed for us now.
